Kuusamo has a strong Sámi history and was once one of the key locations in Lapland. Although Kuusamo is no longer officially part of political Lapland, the region’s Sámi heritage and culture are very much alive. Many locals have Sámi ancestors, and today Sámi traditions are preserved through activities like hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding.
The resort’s most prominent landmark is Pyhävaara, which served as a communal sacrificial site, a seita, for Lapland villages. The name “Holy Fell” originates from this historical site, symbolizing a connection to the past and to nature.

The area’s nature is exceptionally diverse: rapids, waterways, reindeer, snow-laden trees known as “popcorn trees,” and majestic fells and mountains. This provides an authentic Lapland experience that is rare elsewhere in Finland. The low levels of light pollution compared to larger cities increase the likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights, making the northern sky truly magical.
