The unique nature and cultural-historical heritage of Kuusamo
The Kuusamo region is a meeting point for taiga, Arctic, and European fauna, making it a unique habitat for many plant and animal species.
Kuusamo’s landscapes, like the Ruka area and the Oulanka canyons, offer sights that are not found elsewhere in Finland on the same scale.
The area had Sámi villages like Kitka, now in the Posio municipality, and Maanselkä along the northern shore of Lake Kuusamo. These were the southernmost Sámi villages in Kemi Lapland. The Sámi lived here mainly by hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding, which was less prevalent compared to more northern regions.
In Kuusamo, here are many reindeer, and in recent times, tourism plays a significant role in their use. Reindeer were once used for transportation, and with the increase in tourism in the area, it complements reindeer herding perfectly
Kuusamo is one of Finland’s snowiest regions, where the snow cover can last for about 200 days. Winters are cold, during the winter months (December, January, February), average temperature typically ranges between -10°C and -15°C, while in summer, the temperature has reached a high of +31.2°C
